The ASRM Responsible Night Field Guide
Have a good time. Have a way home.
A practical planner for your people, your apps, and your next step.

Prepared with AI assistance and official source checks.
This guide supports ordinary personal planning. ASRM does not drive vehicles, determine fitness to drive, provide medical care, dispatch emergency services, or provide legal immunity. Use the app while stopped. If you need emergency help, contact the emergency service for your location directly.
Start here
You do not need a complicated plan. You need one you can use.
Before leaving, make five decisions:
1. How you expect to get home.
2. Where the pickup will happen.
3. Where you want to go.
4. Who has agreed to help if the first option changes.
5. What you will do if your phone or preferred service is unavailable.
ASRM keeps those choices close to the actions you can take. Your transport provider still confirms the trip. Your phone still places the call. Your contact still decides whether they can answer. Keeping those roles clear helps you recognize what is actually confirmed.
This guide contains an original plan worksheet, a backup exercise, a personal-account checklist, and a rescue-card template. Complete only the details you need. Keep a filled copy private.
1. Choose the return trip before you leave
Decide how you will get home while you have time, a charged phone, and a clear view of the options. If drinking is part of the occasion, arrange a sober ride in advance. That is consistent with NHTSA's responsible-driving guidance.
Use a specific plan. “Someone will drive” is incomplete. Identify the person or service, confirm they can help, and decide what happens if they cannot. A plan in ASRM is not a reservation.
Check the address and the return time. A street address can still point a driver to the wrong side of a large venue. Add the entrance, official pickup zone, or a short landmark. Confirm the venue's current instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Set aside money for the return trip before deciding what to spend during the night. Check current pricing with the provider and leave room for changes where possible. The US$4.99 ASRM Pro membership does not include transport fares.
My return plan
| Detail | My choice |
|---|---|
| Date or occasion | |
| Expected return time and time zone | |
| Pickup address | |
| Entrance or pickup landmark | |
| Destination address | |
| First transport option | |
| How I confirm the booking | |
| Return budget | |
| Backup option | |
If you cannot fill in the backup line with an option you could actually use, the plan needs another step.
2. Build a safety circle with permission
A good contact is someone who knows what you are asking of them.
Ask before adding a person to your plan. Explain whether you want a pickup, a check-in, help finding another service, or simply someone who knows your expected return time. Ask when they will be available and what they want you to do if they cannot answer.
Do not assume a saved phone number is a promise of monitoring. ASRM does not make a contact responsible for your safety or automatically notify them that they have been listed.
A message you can adapt
“I'm planning to be out on [day] and return around [time]. Would you be comfortable being a backup contact until [time]? If my first ride falls through, I would ask you to [specific help]. It's fine to say no; I want to make a plan that works for both of us.”
Contact agreement
| Detail | My note |
|---|---|
| Primary contact | |
| Number, including country code where needed | |
| What they agreed to help with | |
| Availability window | |
| Backup contact or service | |
| What I do if neither answers | |
Keep the list short and current. Verify a number with the person directly. Do not place practice calls to emergency services.
3. Use your own apps and accounts
ASRM is a bridge to the apps and services you choose. It does not need to own your personal accounts to help organize the next step.
There are three different states to understand:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Saved in My Apps | A preference that helps you find the app; no account access is implied |
| Open in provider | A handoff to another app or website, where you review details and act |
| Authorize a connection | A provider-controlled permission flow for the access described there |
Before approving a connection, check the provider's domain, the account name, the requested access, and the feature it enables. Decline a request you do not understand. Never paste a password or access token into a general support message.
A map link can contain the destination you selected. Opening it sends that information to the map provider. Google documents this behavior in its Maps URL format. Read the address before opening it.
Some integrations require a native companion or an approved partner application. Installing the ASRM web app does not bypass those requirements. A provider's name in the directory is not a claim of sponsorship or partnership.
My connection check
- I recognize the provider and account shown.
- I understand which feature needs the permission.
- I know which details leave ASRM when I use the action.
- I can find the provider's revoke-access settings.
- I understand whether this is a link, a one-time check, or a continuing grant.
4. Keep a Ride Rescue Card
The Ride Rescue Card organizes the details you might want to share when you need a hand. It should be easy to read, brief, and current.
Its informal “get out of jail free card” nickname is not literal. The card is not an identity credential, legal defense, bail product, insurance policy, or promise of release. It does not establish that you are fit to drive.
Decide what to put on the card based on who will see it. A copy kept privately on your phone may contain different details from one handed to venue staff. Do not include a password, full payment details, a home access code, or unnecessary health information.
My Ride Rescue Card
I need help arranging my next step.
| Detail | My information |
|---|---|
| Name I want to use | |
| Person or service I want contacted | |
| Phone number | |
| Backup person or service | |
| Current pickup point | |
| Destination I choose to share | |
| Important planning note | |
Please confirm the plan with me and the provider. This card does not authorize purchases, account access, vehicle control, or legal representation.
When you download or share a card, you create a separate copy. Clearing ASRM data does not erase a file already downloaded or recall a message someone received.
5. Work through a failed first option
Your backup should answer a specific problem.
| If this happens | Check this | Use this next step |
|---|---|---|
| The driver cancels | The actual trip status in the provider app | Use the agreed backup or request another available option |
| The pickup point is blocked | Current venue directions | Choose a permitted pickup point and update the provider |
| The fare is different | Current total before confirmation | Review another affordable option or contact your backup |
| Your contact does not answer | Their agreed availability | Try the next agreed contact or service |
| Your phone loses connectivity | Offline details you saved | Use another available phone or ask appropriate staff for help |
| You believe there is an emergency | The situation and location | Contact the local emergency service directly |
Avoid duplicate bookings. If the app appears stuck, check whether a trip already exists before requesting another one. A pending request, a confirmed booking, and an arriving vehicle are different states.
Where practical, wait in the venue's appropriate pickup or waiting area. Ask staff about their actual assistance options if the venue is closing. Do not assume a venue has a staffed transport desk or can provide a ride.
Practice the backup
Imagine your first option is unavailable. Can you name the next service or person without searching? Can you describe the pickup point in one sentence? Is the needed phone number available if this browser stops working?
Write the one thing you still need to resolve:
My next preparation step: ___________________________________________
6. Install, save, and keep a second way to reach help
The ASRM installation and language controls are in the footer. On a supported browser, use Install ASRM or the browser's Add to Home Screen option. Open the app online before you need it away from a connection.
The offline page can show rescue details you explicitly choose to remember on that browser. It cannot promise a ride booking, fresh map data, AI response, or an account connection without connectivity. Device storage can be unavailable or cleared.
Choose whether remembering the plan is appropriate for the device. A shared or unlocked phone can expose saved details to someone else. Keep essential contact information in another suitable form when needed.
The language selector offers supported interface languages and a Device language setting. Other apps and downloaded editions may use separate language settings. Keep names, addresses, and phone numbers exact, and review translated text before sharing important details.
7. Use the right channel
Different needs belong in different places.
| Need | Appropriate channel |
|---|---|
| Arrange transport | Your chosen provider or agreed sober driver |
| Let someone know your plan changed | A reviewed message or call to that person |
| Fix a login, billing, or app issue | ASRM Support Center |
| Understand an app feature | Help Center or automated product assistant |
| Get emergency assistance | The emergency service for your location |
In the United States, 911 is for emergencies requiring immediate help. Be prepared to describe the location and what happened. Do not wait for a product-support ticket or AI conversation when emergency assistance is needed.
The preset call button opens your phone's dialer. Your device may require confirmation. It does not guarantee an answered call or a dispatch response.
8. Close the loop
When you arrive, update anyone who agreed to hear from you. A short message is enough: “I've arrived. Thank you for being available.” Do not assume an ended trip automatically tells your contact you are indoors.
Later, improve the plan using what actually happened. Correct the entrance that was hard to find. Replace the service that did not operate at the needed time. Agree on a better contact window. Remove details you no longer need to keep.
My next-time notes
| Question | My note |

| What worked? | |
| What was unclear or unavailable? | |
| What will I change? | |
| Which saved details should I remove? | |
